Safety Surfaces
There are no prescribed requirements for safety surfacing beneath play equipment in your own private garden, although it should not be placed on a hard surface such as patio slabs or decking. Existing or new lawn is the ideal surface for our freestanding garden play equipment and we suggest that a minimum area of 1.5m is left all around the equipment, with 2.0m behind swings.
To prevent ground erosion or to provide a more giving surface simply lay our Grass Safety Mats at strategic points under or around the equipment. The grass grows through and is cut as normal. Minimum maintenance is required and your garden keeps its natural look. Many of the pictures on our site show installations with mats in place.
Other options
Whilst bark or wood chip is a suitable surface in the garden, to be effective it should be 30cm deep, requires a solid edging strip to prevent it being kicked around, and is attractive to cats and wild animals. Also, water can collect in the bark and consequently soak into the play equipment, encouraging rot.
